A remarkable archaeological treasure tucked away in the northwest of Qatar, bearing witness to the rich history of the early Islamic period. Dating from the late eighth century to the end of the ninth century, Murwab emerges as the largest settlement of its time in the region.
This ancient site comprised 220 cells, forming approximately 45 houses, in addition to a fort with two distinct occupations, two mosques, and a cemetery. Extending over 1.5 kilometers from east to west, Murwab offered its inhabitants green areas known as “rawdah” and vital wells for sustenance.
Of particular historical significance, Murwab Fort stands as the oldest Islamic fort uncovered in Qatar. Archaeological excavations have revealed a fascinating narrative of reconstruction and resizing over time, as evidenced by the overlapping foundation walls.
